July 18, 2004 -- Any woodworker or metalworker who uses a power or hand sander knows the frustration of having to stop in the middle of a sanding job to replace a worn piece of sandpaper so they can continue sanding. While the Sandpaper Gator does not eliminate the fact that you have to replace the sandpaper, it does make the task a lot easier, quicker and less expensive. Co-inventor Paul Rowell knows all about that problem.
Paul worked for many years in the Hollow Metal Door Industry welding metal doors and frames. Some were damaged and needed repair with Bondo which had to be ground down and then sanded smooth. When welding metal frames together, the corners of the frame also needed to be sanded smooth to eliminate the grinding marks. When you do a lot of finishing in a competitive business, buying precut pieces of sandpaper is much too costly. The best alternative Paul thought was to buy the bulk 9 x 11 sandpaper sheets and cut them down to the size he needed. But cutting these also posed another problem. The conventional ways to cut sandpaper with scissors, utility knives, folding and tearing or using power shears were either too slow , too inaccurate and just ended up dulling your expensive set of shear blades. There had to be a better way.
Hence the creation of the Sandpaper Cutter board. Where a single hardened serrated metal cutting blade was mounted to a wood board and used to cut sandpaper sheets accurately, quickly and would last through thousands of cut before needing replacement. Paul knew that if it worked so well for him it could work for other trades as well. The only problem now was to try to create a product that would do more than one size.
So, through much collaboration with his business partner Mike ODonnell, the concept of the Sandpaper Gator evolved. The final result is a metal pan configured in such a way that it would not only cut sandpaper sheets accurately and quickly, it would also cut the four most popular sizes of power and hand sanders as well.
The Sandpaper Gator is a patent pending product and is not yet available in stores. It also received Honorable Mention in this years Invent Now America contest.
